Termite Exterminator

Termites are present throughout the U.S. (except Alaska.) However, there is a concentration of these pests around Northern Virginia. They are capable of causing catastrophic damage to homes without a homeowner even being aware of it.

Understanding More About Them

Have you ever flipped an old log over to find it consumed by what appears to be white ant-like things? The wood looks as if the very life was stripped entirely away. Nothing but the skeletal pulpish fiber remains. Just imagine this is the wood inside your home. Over time, the framework can become compromised, and the integrity of the wood can weaken.

How do they get into your home? You can unknowingly bring them in. The wooden items they live in may surprise you. Nearby-infested structures (sheds, woodpiles, neighbor's houses) make your home highly susceptible to infestation.

Termite Species In Virginia

The most common termites here in our area include the Eastern Subterranean and the Formosan.

Eastern Subterraneans have massive underground colonies that can easily cover most of your yard. These termites create elaborate tunnel systems in the soil, which they use to forage for food and move between their colony and food source. They can also construct mud tubes to help them avoid the heat, which they use to travel up the sides of buildings and other vertical surfaces to access wood above ground level. They are particularly attracted to damp and decaying wood and are known to cause damage to both residential and commercial buildings.

Formosan Subterraneans are often called "super termites" because of their ability to cause significant damage to buildings and other wooden structures. They are social insects living in colonies containing up to several million individuals. They can quickly consume large amounts of wood and other cellulose-containing materials and can cause serious structural damage to buildings and homes. They are also known to infest trees and other natural wood sources and can cause crop damage. They can build aerial nests, which can be found on the sides of buildings, trees, and other vertical surfaces. The nests can be made from mud and other materials and may be several feet wide and tall.

Termite Prevention

A few simple things, such as removing woodpiles in your yard, are a great first step. Never stack wood next to your home, garage, or shed. Remove fallen, dead trees and tree stumps from your yard. Be mindful when bringing second-hand wood furniture and items into your home. The last thing you want is to find them because of a flea market buy. Lastly, a crucial measure includes regular treatment for your home. Please don't wait until you have a problem to get treatment because it can be costly.
